“I want to start training, but I need to get fit first” - says everyone always who has no real excuse on why they haven’t started training. If this is not you, then you’ve heard this before. Maybe from a friend or family member who you've desperately tried to convince to join you at your favorite gym.
I recently read a book, actually quite a few. But one quote that has stuck with me ever since is a quote by Carol Dweck and it reads “Becoming is better than being”
Being new to the gym and struggling through your workout is better than being someone who doesn’t even bother to try. Lifting the PVC is better than someone not lifting anything at all. Being someone that does a ring rows instead of a pull up, is better than being someone who just says “I can’t do it”
How do you get fit without taking the first step? How do you get strong without lifting weights? How do you lose fat without taking control of your diet and exercise regime?
In hindsight we are all beginners everyday. Even the most elite of the elite is a beginner. They might be able to do all the movements, run as fast as hell and lift all the weights, but they come in everyday knowing that today they’ll try to lift heavier than yesterday, run faster than yesterday and move even better than the day before.
You don’t need to be fit to start your fitness journey. That’s like walking next to a car before you start learning to drive the car. Isn’t the whole point of driving the car to get in and learn? Why would you want to get fit to become fitter to get better at fitness? Just reading that sentence makes no sense at all. Just as your reasoning behind why you haven’t started your fitness journey yet.
The only thing you need to do is to show up, and give your absolute best. Whether that is elite athlete commitment or couch potato never lifted a weight in your life level commitment. You becoming fitter and healthier, is better than being unhealthy and unfit. You showing up for the first time, is better than making excuses and being a lazy ass.
So straight up - you only get fit by taking action.
Get in that car! Get driving!
