GETTING BACK IN THE SADDLE

This is written purely from a personal perspective. Maybe, just maybe it helps at least one of you to get back in the proverbial saddle. If we rewind back to early 2020 when Covid was still just a problem back in Wuhan, and we went on with life in our merry way.

Just over a year ago I was in the best physical shape of my life. Doing five weight training sessions a week, and also running +-30km a week, cycling +-60km a week and swimming +-3km a week on top of the other training. My nutrition was on point and weighing in at a decent 84kg and a legit “six pack”, I was riding high on confidence and well on my way to compete in my very first triathlon, Ironman 50150, race which was scheduled for August of 2020.

Besides being in the best shape of my life, my personal life was also flourishing. If you were to tell me then that in a year's time I was going to be the father of a beautiful boy, involved with a couple of different businesses and the craziest part of it all, an avid golfer, I would have told you let's slow down on the wacky tabacky.

Eventually Covid reached our shores, and the rest of the world. It became an “everyone problem''. Country after country started to close down their borders, entering into lockdowns and the world was starting to shut down. To say I was not in a good place mentally is a total understatement. It was all doom and gloom in my head. Gone was my high flying confidence, my training schedule and the idea of actually competing and finishing an Iron Man event.

I’m not going to bore you with more lockdown drama as we all went through it and we all suffered in our own way. Fast forward to the 16 th of February 2021. We are still in some form of a lockdown, but life has returned to some kind of “normal”. Life gives you…well life, and then at the same time the realities and responsibilities that come with that new life also hits home.

Here is where I get to the point. I had fallen off my horse. The horse being the only constant thing in my life, what I always depended on when everything around me was changing fast. The horse that was exercising. I went from what I listed above a year earlier to barely training twice a week and working very hard on my dad bod at a bulky 94kg. My confidence was down, my drive and motivation was down and although I am extremely happy in my personal life, I always have this feeling that something is missing.

Forward to today. 6 th of May 2021. The expected doom and gloom that I created in my mind, turned out to be something that was of no serious nature. The gym is welcoming new and excited faces on a daily basis. I  enjoy coaching more than ever. My other business ventures and adorable family are also keeping me on my toes.

The biggest change that has happened is that I have decided to get back in the saddle. My big secret? I decided to get back in the saddle of my exercise horse.

I am not doing a crazy amount of training, but I am going to be consistent again. Today marks the first time that I managed to train  for 4 consecutive days. My family and I also got back into dialing in our nutrition habits..

This is it. I took back control of the things that I can control. All the other things are the joys, stresses, excitement, and day to day of life. Those things will always change but your wellness, physical and mental health is in your hands. This is where you can strive for consistency. Being consistent in your training and nutrition is what will bring forth the biggest change in your life. Be the change you want in your life.
